FILMS THAT TEACH?
Well... that is a question that has being arround teacher´s mind for a several time and my answer is...DEPEND ON THE AIM.
Today we have finished to wach the film "Mulán"(I have said finish because we stated to wach it the previous lesson).
The objetive of this session was to analize deeperly the film in order to find out what was the message from the film. To do that, the teacher gave us some question to help us to gide through the topic we had to be focuss on.
After that we had time to write some ideas about the positive, negative and neutral aspects from the topics of the film. The people who had the same topic, had to be in groups and compare the aspects. aften a few minutes talking a menber of each group had to explain the ideas of the group.
In my case, our group had to talk about the moral of the film.
This were our conclusions:
- POSITIVE ASPECTS:
- To fight in order to get your objetives.
- To aware the people about women´s role in China
- Self confidence
- Importance of the family
- Women can fight as a men
- To be corageous against adversities.
- NEGATIVES ASPECTS:
- Dificult for the women to do the same than the men.
- the emperator doesn´t care about father´s illness
- NEUTRAL ASPECTS:
- To have a knowledge about the China´s culture.
- The idea of not follow the orders. It can be good, like the film, or bad when the things don´t go well. Does the aim justifie the way?
I really enjoyed this activity, it is different and I think we can do the same with some films in 6th grade, it will be interesting to know the reation of the students.
Don´t you think?

Hello Anne!
ResponderEliminarYes, of course it is a very good activity but it depends how the teachers do and what type of film they choose.
From my point of view, Mulan is a very good film to watch in class with our children because is different. Here, the hero (heroine) is a girl and not a boy (as in the most of the other Disney/Pixar films). Mulan has to be a Geisha and she prefers do other things that she likes. She breaks all the time the rules (in a positive way), I mean for example, at the beginning of the film Mulan appear playing the chess with men and wining them instead of behave as a Geisha.
Another point that I want to comment is, I do not think that it has negative aspects, as an audience of the film. Is one of the few films that the woman appears as a hero (in this case heroine), and for me this is enough to be an important film. And not only because Mulan is a heroine, also because Mulan and the rest of the characters are from Asia, and we are not used to seeing kiddie movies like that.
After that, I want to clarify some comments that I hear in class. We agree that the film is so important to do a good activity related with it, but also is important if the teacher knows to do a good activity.
On the other hand, if the film is not so good but the teacher prepares a very very good activity, the results can be so positive. So what I want to say is that both factors (teacher and films) must be in the same proportion to achieve a successfully activity.
To finish I have only to say, that we must evaluate all of this things because in a future (not far) we have to do in the best way that we can.
